DNP DS40

Until recently my only beef with the amazing DNP DS40 printer was its lack of support for cutting 4×6 media into 2×6 strips. As anyone who owns one of these printers knows they are build very well and print fast and reliably. In my opinion they are one of the best overall photo booth printers on the market, but that's another discussion.

So you can imagine when news broke that DNP was releasing a firmware update to bring the 2×6 cut functionality to the DS40 (as we wrote about here ). This was all great news until we learned that the cutter in the unit was having some issues ejecting 2×6 strips properly, while rare (~1% of the time) it was more often then DNP decided to allow. This was not the news I wanted to hear and was worried that they may not ever publicly release the drivers. Thankfully they did release them, but with a catch.

When the official release came from DNP we learned that unlike the RX1 firmware the DS40 would require a combination of hardware upgrade and firmware upgrade. Worse yet your unit(s) would need to be ship back to DNP for this upgrade putting them out of commission for that period of time. Not to mention the upgrade would cost you $99 to have performed. This was unfortunately and a no go for me at the time of their release.

Recently Foto Club Inc announced on their blog that they will be providing upgrade services within the US. As a added bonus they are offering this service at $79. The individual is responsible for shipping the unit to them and they will handle shipping it back.

I am happy to say that I now have 1 unit free that I will be sending to them for the upgrade. I will be documenting the process and results here. Hopefully my experiences will help you in deciding whether or not to upgrade your unit(s).

Have any of you had this upgrade done yet? If so what was your experience?
